When 12 year old Nina Patel is nominated by her classmates to represent her seventh grade class at Homecoming, she’s thrilled. However, Nina’s Indian heritage comes with pride and restrictions, and her traditional parents refuse to let their daughter assimilate into such an American tradition. When Nina asks her parents for permission, she gets the answer she expects, but filled with hope Nina decides to ask her father one last time. When she shows up at his office unannounced, she discovers her father in a compromising position with his secretary. Her father, realizing his daughter has caught him in the act, feels a tremendous amount of guilt and tension, and in effort to buy his daughter's silence, he agrees to let her go to Homecoming. But when Nina gets her wish and goes to the dance, she only feels the gravity of her situation more and no pretty dress or Homecoming crown can make a fairy tale of her shattered reality.
